Bézier is one of the aliases of Robert Yang, Californian producer and DJ, one of the first members of the San Francisco gay music collective Honey Soundsystem. After working in the underground scene in San Francisco, he has recently been dividing his time between San Francisco and Berlin. In MOAI Magazine we recently got to hear some of his production when one of his tracks was included on the Soft Touch Express compilation on the Trax Only label.
This time we get a four-track EP for his recently launched label m-i-v (short for mémoire involontaire) entitled Undulate.
The opening track of the EP is Oscilloscope, an energetic Techno cut that mixes other factors: a few drops of HI-NRG, some Acid and a high tempo with claps and inexhaustible consistency. To follow comes Stroboscope, almost a continuation of the previous track, with a slightly more melancholic tone reminiscent of vintage sounds. After two such intense tracks, Periscope is a 47-second gem that leaves you with peace and tranquillity… even if only for that short space of time.
To close this interesting release, we have the EP’s title track. Undulate opens another box of highly danceable spirals, a sparkling rhythmic intro that continues with a hypnotic and omnipresent pattern. Once again, Bézier transports us to other previous decades for seven minutes without falling into clichés or easy resources, demonstrating his mastery in the handling of analogue synthesizers.
