On 17 February 2020, terrible news shook the music world, as another omen of how bad the year was going to be.

At the age of 56, Andrew Weatherall, The Governor, as some friends and collaborators called him, left us.

I think, without exaggeration, we were all in shock, and it took us a while to recover.

Today marks the first anniversary of his departure, and to pay tribute to him his brother Ian Weatherall and his good friend Duncan Gray (also known musically as Sons of Slough) have released an EP with four tracks. In a Lonely Place is a New Order track, specifically the b-side of their first single, Ceremony. The choice of track was not random, because, as in the lives of many people around that age who have loved music, Factory Records marked the eighties for Ian and Andrew.

 

One original and three remixes, by three of Andrew’s career collaborators David Holmes, Keith Tenniswood and Sean Johnston. The release is out today 17 February in digital format and on 12 June on vinyl via Rotters Golf Club. The proceeds of this tribute will be shared equally between Andrew’s partner Lizzie and Thrombosis UK (remember that Weatherall died from a pulmonary embolism which, sadly, reached his heart causing the fatal outcome).

It is a year since The Governor left us. But his legend continues and lives on.
