Chris McCormick is the name of this Irish DJ and producer known as Cromby, who left his native country to settle in Berlin and push his career forward for good.
And we’re pretty sure he has achieved his goal. The German capital still remembers his 11-hour set in 2019 at a closing set at the legendary Panorama Bar in Berghain. But it wasn’t just that set, he’s a regular in that booth and a few others in Berlin, either alone or with Sally C, another Irishwoman he enjoys those B2Bs with.
As a producer, this year 2022 celebrates his tenth anniversary, having released on labels such as Fell My Bicep, Phantasy Sound and REKIDS. This time Cromby returns to his Potency label, skilfully crafting three cuts to suit every mood on the dancefloor. Whether you’re looking to throw your hands up in the euphoria of rush hour, lose yourself in the hazy after-hour, or be consumed by the overflowing acid banger.
Potency 002, as the title suggests, is the second release on his label, which debuted in 2020 with the first release, and comes after two EP’s on Erol Alkan’s label. His new EP once again presents us with Cromby only looking for fun on the dancefloor, and for that he doesn’t mind looking in the boots of the funniest raves. Obsessed opens the EP, with a classic bass drum line coupled with a banging bassline, to which a hypnotic synth pattern is added to make you sweat immediately. It’s followed by Body Rush, whose title says it all, with another pushing bass line and is embellished with vocal samples reminiscent of early house and takes you straight to the rave.
To close, the 1051 office favourite, Cromby Excavator, that Acid banger that starts with sounds that make you have no doubts about what you’re going to find, joined by the bass drum in cadences that take you to 140 bpm with extraordinary skill. One of the best Acid bangers we’ve heard in recent times, with a progression that brings to mind masters of the genre.

“The label is a creative outlet for my own explorations between the realms of House, Techno and Acid, combining old school beats with new school flavours. Now that the dancefloors are coming back, I wanted an EP that could be called upon in any dancefloor situation, and I imagined what it would be like in certain moments: the hands-in-the-air, the after-hours dancefloor, and the acid cut.”
