Today we continue with this magnificent week of releases in 1051 Magazine. And we continue with legends.
Today’s release is the advance single from the upcoming album by Belgian Fabrice Lig. Nearly three decades of professional career as a DJ, producer and remixer, whose first productions reached the public under his first aliases, Interwaves and Bug Orchestra. He is an artist with his own label, known as the king of Techno Funk (he is especially fond of the Roland SH 101, that analogical and monophonic synth so simple and brilliant at the same time), whose productions have been released on the best labels in the history of electronic music such as KMS, Planet-e, Submerge, R&S, Third Ear, 7th City Records, F-Communications, Versatile, Classic, Compost, Subject Detroit, Motech, Raygun, Playhouse Records, Kanzleramt, 70 Drums, Clone or Trapez Ltd.
He has collaborated with or remixed Laurent Garnier, Kevin Saunderson, Agoria, DJ Hell, Ken Ishii, Kenny Hawkes, Rob Mello, Frederic Galliano, Chymera or Trüby Trio. And one of the best quotes about his ability as an electronic artist was said by Jean Michael Jarre: “What is touching me in Fabrice Lig’s career is the way he is following his own line, without caring about trends, and that’s the path an artist should follow. It is not post Detroit, it’s an emotion”.
The man accompanying him on this release was involved in six of the most influential albums in the history of electronic music. Wolfgang Flür joined Ralf Schneider and Ralf Hütter on tour in 1973 and from then on was part of Kraftwerk until 1987. A true living legend, and very active at 74 years of age, as we can see in this new release. After leaving Kraftwerk, Wolfgang Flür has continued to work in the world of music, formed the band Yamo, and recently released an album with his fellow countrymen U96. He wrote an interesting biography entitled I Was a Robot, in which he recounts his life in the Düsseldorf band.
Cinema is a brilliant snapshot of both artists working together in unison, bringing Lig´s signature Techno Funk sound and Wolfgang’s ability to fuse pop inspiration and catchy vocals through the use of robotic mechanics. Perfect music that balances headphones and dancefloors on the horizon, alchemy between underground club sounds and carefully crafted pop melody.
The EP includes five versions, among them the original version of Cinema, a French version of the original, as well as three interesting remixes. The first is by Detroit’s Ectomorph, followed by one by UK electro king Carl Finlow, and we finish with Dutch synth master Versalife aka Conforce.
Detroit legend Ectomorph’s Sinema Mix strips away the core elements and turns the original into a heavy analogue drum session, saturated with carefully calculated effects manipulations of the vocals. Equal parts hallucinogenic and relentless, the remix is a broken beat exercise designed to melt minds, fully ready for a dark concrete warehouse when allowed.
Electro legend Carl Finlow delivers a rendition of the original that stays true to the playful joys of the original version. Finlow’s signature groovy beats take centre stage, with the UK producer fully embracing the original vocals and musical elements. A crisp, clean and precise remix, as expected.
Versalife (aka Conforce) takes his beloved Dutch electronic style to higher levels with his version of the original, fully utilising each and every one of his favourite machines from his studio.
The EP is completed with a special bonus version of the original, aptly titled “French Version”, which was released alongside the radio edit in July this year as the first preview.
