The figure of Richard Melville Hall, better known as Moby, has been a truly important figure in recent music history, and his career spans more than three decades.
Last year, in May, he released his first album on the prestigious and legendary Deutsche Grammophon label, which specializes in classical music. Reprise was the album’s title, and to create it Moby chose a selection of songs he had released over his three-decade career, which he subjected to acoustic and orchestral arrangements. He was assisted by The Budapest Art Orchestra and a plethora of guest artists, the result of which was a huge commercial success and critical acclaim.
Exploring that terrain where electronic and acoustic sounds meet, Moby and other leading artists have now reworked some of these tracks for Reprise – Remixes, a new album to be released by Deutsche Grammophon on May 20th, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the release of Moby’s eponymous debut album.
The first remix in the series of releases ahead of the album’s May release comes from Bergamo-based Italian duo Mathame, composed of brothers Amedeo and Matteo Giovanelli. The Italians bring us a remix of Lift Me Up, taking the 2005 classic and adding their own unique, hypnotic sound. Moby’s haunting vocals bounce between powerful drum machines and intricate arpeggio progressions to put a twist on the classic song.
