Adrian Nicholas Matthews Thaws, born in Bristol and belonging to the excellent vintage of 1968, better known as Tricky, is still one of the most restless musicians of his generation. Recognised as one of the founding fathers of Trip-Hop, belonging to the first incarnation of The Wild Bunch and later Massive Attack, he shattered half the world in 1995 with his first album, Maxinquaye, dedicated to the mother he lost when he was only four years old.
In 2021, twenty-six years later, he continues to surprise us with each new release.
Lonely Guest was conceived and elaborated over the last 18 months, as a result of the blockade and quarantine caused by the Covid pandemic. But, as he himself has made clear, this is not a Tricky album. It is a meeting of musical madmen from different environments and horizons, in which we are going to find people like Joe Talbot, from Idles, or Paul Smith from Maxïmo Park or one of the discoveries of False Idols, Marta, the London rapper Kway or the legendary, recently deceased and already much missed Lee “Scratch” Perry.
In fact, 2020 was to be Tricky’s tour year for his latest album, Fall To Pieces. But the global circumstances that have affected us all prevented such an international tour, and Adrian began to plot this collaborative artifact made during that period of social isolation.
Apart from the aforementioned, the crew recruited to create this Lonely Guest included Nanna Øland Fabricius, Danish vocalist better known as Oh Land who has previously worked with Tricky, Manchester-based Londoner Murkage Dave, London-based singer of Dutch and Zimbabwean descent Rina Mushonga and another vocalist, Queens-based New Yorker Breanna Barbara.
A musical, multicultural and international cobblestone that has generated an exuberant work loaded with the personal nuances of the Bristol creator and his usual signature. Since that first album released in 1995, he has unashamedly mixed punk rock, hip hop, reggae, soul and dense, dark electronica. Speaking of the past, we will undoubtedly think of Nearly God from 1996, where Tricky included stellar collaborators such as Terry Hall (The Specials, Fun Boy Three), Neneh Cherry, Alison Moyet (Yazoo) and Björk.
This new release by the Bristolian marks a new turning point in his career, with a considerable creative rejuvenation, a new space opened up in his career to push forward less explored sonic horizons. Something that Tricky has undoubtedly been looking for repeatedly in his professional career.
