There is a new batch of DJ’s and producers coming out of Ireland that is really important, with a punk and Rave spirit of notable presence. Or:la, Brame & Hamo, Cromby (who we recently talked about in our virtual pages) to name but a few, and the Belfast native we’re talking about today, Sally C.
Sally grew up listening to the music of Andy C and Roni Size played by her older brother, and began collecting house records from the late nineties and early nineties. Her time as a student was spent in Dundee, Scotland, and it was there that she began her DJ career, DJing in public for the first time in 2013. A couple of years later she settled in Berlin, where she continued to DJ and started her career as a producer.
In June 2020, and on her own label, Big Saldo’s Chunkers, Sally releases her first reference. Big Saldo’s Chunkers 001 was a runaway success, requiring two reissues, both of which sold out within a week. BSC002 continues in the same direct, hard-hitting style that has become her trademark. Give it to Me is the star track on side A, emotional and euphoric in equal measure, bringing the energy of the big saxophone over seven thrilling minutes. Sally omits the bass and gives the saxophone a chance to shine alongside her trademark percussion. Summer 2022 anthem candidate.
A much requested track at last year’s concerts, ‘Downtown’ kicks off the B-side and opens with a question, “Do you want to dance?”. And, of course, we desperately do. It’s the very embodiment of a Chunker, with its cool vocals, bass line and drums. He’s the ultimate everything, good for opening, closing and highlights. Nasty does exactly what it says on the tin and hits with dizzying kicks, funky breaks and Saldo’s nastiest bassline.
With close ties to the Kyiv crew, Sally will donate a percentage of the EP’s profits to two causes close to her heart in light of the current devastating situation.
“I have touched on these issues many times at one of my favourite clubs in the world, Kyiv ?. This club has a firm place in my heart. My friends here and the people of Ukraine are going through the unimaginable at the moment. I will donate a percentage of the proceeds from this album to the club’s community fund and to a Berlin-based cause, Bridges Over Berlin, which supports LGBTQIA+, BiPOC and other marginalised people fleeing Ukraine. I ask that if you buy this album or enjoy the free promotion, please also consider donating to these causes.”
