Sam Shure – Malfunction EP

Sam Shure – Malfunction EP

Samuel Schürmann is a German producer and DJ better known as Sam Shure, who has been a real driving force on the Stil vor Talent roster since landing his debut EP Nandoo in 2018. Sam Shure has cemented his position as one of today’s top names when it comes to shape-shifting polyamorous soundscapes. Using his background in traditional music to take club music in unprecedented directions, Sam continues to carve a lane of his own, and his latest four-track release for Stil vor Talent, Malfunction, demonstrates a new tour de force in his quest for material that transcends time and space.

Fusing melodic Middle Eastern twists with the most avant-garde, circuit-driven arsenal, the title track brings out an infectious metronomic swagger adorned with cascades of shimmering bleeps and furious percussion that never ceases to swell as the bars tick by. Doped with chiselled breaks and fractalised sound design riddled with fractured vocal samples, Permutation throws us into a cauldron of shattered synth ellipses and bass moves that will make it hard to find your way back to the surface.

Not about turning down the volume by an inch really, Attenuator does quite the opposite of its name, except perhaps for its more understated, depth-friendly approach. Following the dubber’s path, Shure shows the breadth of his skills and his ability to cut fascinating slabs of pared-down psychedelia. As a finale, Sopra il Mondo (featuring Francesca Siano) is a simple track tinged with Shure’s broad palette of jazz influences, Latin neoclassicism and Eastern harmonics. An ambitious and inspired close to a new masterpiece from an artist in full possession of his art.
