Weval – Time Goes EP

Weval – Time Goes EP

Weval is the union of two Dutch artists who, with different musical sensibilities, have managed to combine a very identifiable and personal sound. Harm Coolen (b. 1986) and Merijn Scholte Albers (b. 1989) met around 2010 when they were both working for the film industry. It was then that they discovered a common vice, electronic music, although the sources from which they drank were different. Harm Coolen was more into House and Jazz while Merijns turned to 90s TripHop and Rock. Thanks to this variety, their music has been like a melting pot of these influences that has resulted in a personal stamp that envelops their productions.

In 2013 they released their first EP on Atomnation, but the following year they joined Kompakt’s line-up, until 2021 when they moved from Cologne to London to join Technicolour, that interesting sub-label of Ninja Tune.

Now they share their new single and the title track from the Time Goes EP, the second single from the forthcoming EP, due for release on April 29th. The 4-song EP is a follow-up to the electronic duo’s 2021 EP Changed For The Better which, in the style of Weval, featured bold and beautiful melodies and compositions.

Time Goes EP

Time Goes is an example of the iconic 90s records the duo listened to while on the road: “we were very much inspired by the electronic music of that era, in particular late 90s trip hop,” they add. “With ‘Time Goes it started like: can we record drums that sound like those records, without using samples? We spent a lot of time getting the drums right, along with the bassline.”

It follows the release of lead single, Minute By Minute, in which we hear chords that build with anticipation and hypnotic vocals, resulting in a nostalgic, euphoric sound. “The inspiration for this track was the beginning of Underworld’s biggest hit, Born Slippy. We always wanted to hear the intro over and over again”.
